A staff member in Brown University's Department of Computer Science (Brown CS) has just received an honor that will provide her with additional skills and resources to continue her work with diversity and inclusion. Financial and Outreach Coordinator Laura Dobler has been named one of the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion's six Administrative Fellows for 2017.
"This is so important to me," Laura says. "It's an honor be chosen, and it's so powerful to be able to draw on a network of peers as we all take action to improve diversity and inclusion both in our own departments and across Brown."
The program lasts for a year and provides twice-weekly opportunities for participants to meet with leaders (Laura and her cohort recently spent time with Rafael Zapata, Chief Diversity Officer at Providence College), advance their skills and abilities, and achieve personal goals. Having completed a Strengths Finder workshop, the Administrative Fellows are beginning to share best practices, lessons learned, and ideas that they can bring back to their own teams.
"Brown CS has really ramped up our efforts with diversity and inclusion over the past year," Laura explains, "from creating a Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan and holding Diversity Town Halls and Diversity Lectures to collecting inclusivity feedback for courses, hiring student advocates, and creating a transition program for incoming students. I hope everyone's following our progress at our Diversity webpages, and we have a lot of other projects in the works. Our mission is to create and sustain a diverse and inclusive environment in which all students, faculty, and staff can thrive, and I'm really looking forward to using the new skills and resources I'm developing to help get us there."
