DARPA Looks At New Work From HCRI And Bertram Malle On Teaching Robots Moral Norms

Tagging photos and identifying spam? Relatively straightforward tasks for artificial intelligence. Understanding the intricacies of human social and moral norms in all their shades of grey? Much harder. DARPA has recently published an article about new work in this area from Brown University's Humanity Centered Robotics Initiative and Professor Bertram Malle. The researchers built a cognitive-computational model of human norms and created a machine-learning algorithm that allows an AI system to use human data to identify the norms governing a scenario that it hasn't previously seen.
