Brown University's Department of Computer Science (Brown CS) is pleased to announce that faculty members Malte Schwarzkopf and Ritambhara Singh (also of Brown’s Data Science Institute and Center for Computational Molecular Biology) will receive named professorships. Effective July 1, 2024, Malte will be the Eliot Horowitz ‘03 Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Ritambhara will be the John E. Savage Assistant Professor in Computer Science.

Malte joined the Brown CS faculty in 2019. His interests include computer systems, especially distributed systems, operating systems, and privacy-preserving systems. His recent honors include a EuroSys Test-of-Time Award, Brown’s Barrett Hazeltine Citation for Excellence in Teaching, Guidance, and Support, Brown’s Henry Merritt Wriston Fellowship, a Google Research Scholar award, and an NSF CAREER Award for work on privacy-compliance by construction in web applications. His latest teaching includes CSCI 0300/1310 Fundamentals of Computer Systems and CSCI 2390 Privacy-Conscious Computer Systems.

Ritambhara also joined the Brown CS faculty in 2019. Her research develops machine learning methods with broad goals of data integration and model interpretation for biological and biomedical applications. Her recent honors include Brown’s Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, an NHGRI Genomic Innovator Award for machine learning approaches to reveal gene regulation mechanisms in diseases, and Brown’s Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research Award. Her latest teaching includes CSCI 1470 Deep Learning and CSCI 2952-G Deep Learning in Genomics.
