Brown University's Department of Computer Science (Brown CS) is pleased to announce that effective July 1, 2026, faculty members Peihan Miao, Chen Sun, and Suresh Venkatasubramanian (also Professor of Data Science, Deputy Director of the Data Science Institute, and Director of the Center for Technological Responsibility, Reimagination, and Redesign) have received named professorships. Peihan is the John E. Savage Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Chen is the Eliot Horowitz Assistant Professor of Computer Science, and Suresh is the Dean's Professor of Data Science and Computer Science.

Peihan joined the Brown CS faculty in 2022. Her research interests lie broadly in cryptography and security, with a focus on secure multi-party computation, bridging theory and practice by expanding its early success in special cases like private set intersection to a much broader range of applications. Her recent honors include an NSF CAREER Award, Meta Research Award, Google Research Scholar Award, and an Amazon Research Award. Her latest teaching includes CSCI 1515 Applied Cryptography, CSCI 1510 Introduction to Cryptography and Computer Security, and CSCI 2952-L Special Topics in Secure Computation.

Chen has been a member of the Brown CS faculty since 2021. His research into computer vision, machine learning, and AI focuses on learning generalizable temporal dynamics from unlabeled videos, whether as multimodal concepts, human behaviors, or raw pixels, and includes applications of these video-centric world models in robotics. His recent honors include an NSF CAREER Award, a Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research Award, and a Samsung Global Research Outreach Award. His latest teaching includes CSCI 2470 Deep Learning, CSCI 2952-N Advanced Topics in Deep Learning, and CSCI 2950-K Special Topics in Computational Linguistics (co-taught with Eugene Charniak).

Suresh joined the Brown CS faculty in 2021. His background is in algorithms and computational geometry, as well as data mining and machine learning, and his current research interests lie in algorithmic fairness, and more generally the impact of automated decision-making systems in society. His recent accomplishments include co-founding Brown’s AI Research Institute on Interaction for AI Assistants (ARIA), co-Chairing the Association for Computing Machinery’s US Technology Policy Committee’s Subcommittee on AI and Algorithms, and founding the Center for Technological Responsibility, Reimagination, and Redesign. His latest teaching includes CSCI 1491 Fairness in Automated Decision Making (formerly CSCI 1951-Z) and HIST 1825-J History of Artificial Intelligence.
